Benefits of Medical Massage Boutique's Services:

Medical Massage Boutique Presents: New Year, New Body

by: Alex Cromwell ( Guest Post)

The first two weeks of January are the busiest season for the commercial gyms, fitness equipment stores and personal training sales.

The reasons are obvious and its human nature to want to improve our lives over a significant date such as the start of the year. Unfortunately the statistics show that roughly 90% will quit and self sabotage their goals mid-January. This is why I have always believed New Year's Resolutions are the worst time to make a fitness goals.

This is not meant to discourage anyone, it is my intention to show you a better plan so that you will succeed in 2018 and beyond with these goals. Here are 5 tips to make sure your 2018 is the most healthy and robust year of your life.

1. Delay your start date.

This is counter-intuitive but I can tell you from experience what happens those first two weeks of January. Gyms are packed, gyms parking lots are packed. A new fitness plan is not something you want to just rush into and doing so at this time is setting yourself up for failure.

Why not take the first two weeks and think hard about your goals and how you will achieve them. Write stuff down. Go to bed an hour earlier and wake up an hour earlier. Re-set your internal clock and acclimatize to the change. If you have current fitness regime, keep this up and do it at this time. Some air squats, jumping jacks and pushups.

Air Squats Tips:

1. Stand with your feet more than shoulder width apart slightly pointed out.

2. Keep your head up and arch in your lower back.

3. Use arms for balance and as you squat your knees should track over your feet( also keep the knees pointed out slightly)

4. Go as low as you can while maintaining the arch in your back and feet flat on the ground.

Due to the large muscle mass of the legs and hips you will fire up your resting metabolic rate and thus burn more calories as these large muscles recover. Do higher reps ( over 10) to get the heart rate going too.

Jumping Jacks Tips:

1. Stand with the feet together and arms at the sides.

2. Jump in the air while you simultaneously spread your legs to shoulder width and raise your hands to clap overhead. When you land your hands should be together and feet shoulder width apart. Jump again and return feet and hands to starting position.

3. Don't jump too high.

4. Practice soft landing ( keep knees bend to cushion your landing).

You may not have done these since high school but they are great cardio exercise. This will get your muscles, heart, and lungs working. Also helps with coordination and balance.

Push Ups Tips:

  1. Start lying face down on the floor. Place your hands face down on the floor just under your shoulders.
  2. Basic Version: keep your knees on the floor as you push up. Advance Version: keep the balls of your feet on the floor.
  3. Keeping your core tight, elbows in the body straight push yourself up until your arms are completely straight.
  4. Slowly return to the resting position and repeat.

Push Ups are a great upper body strength developer. Even If you can only do 3, do them everyday and you will soon increase your muscle endurance too. The muscles of your arms, shoulders, chest back and core benefits from doing these. As with your air squats the resting metabolic rate will increased, burning more calories even at rest.

Doesn't have to be the full hour, just get moving everyday. Do an inventory of your eating, get rid of sugary snacks and junk food, find/buy/wash and organize workout wear. Consult with your Doctor if necessary. Pack a gym toiletry bag/shower kit if needed. Buy or organize Tupperware. Get everything ready and find a suitable program. Plan to start your new routine at some date in the next two weeks. You pick the date and have everything ready for it.

2. Think beyond 2018

Is your goal to get in shape only for 2018 then let yourself go in 2019? No. These are beneficial lifestyle changes that need to become a part of who you are. These will help you physically but also emotionally and mentally as well. If you think about this as something you will stick with for life, you will be more serious about it.

3. Pick a time and venue that is realistic to stick with

This may take some trial and error but it will be crucial to your success. Mornings are great as there are fewer interruptions in the wee hours. If this is isn't for you find a lunch time activity, and after work class, an evening work out time. This is ME time. Whatever time that is; you choose it, protect it, own it.

4. Good habits will form

If you stick with it long enough it will become a habit and one that you won't want to miss. This takes a few weeks for most people so stick with it. In my experience it is easier to do something daily than to do it three times a week. No one can go hard everyday so have some light days as well. Active recovery is better that procrastination.

5. Get Fit for YOU. There are Experts like Medical Massage Boutique Health Care Specialists such as Registered Massage Therapist, Chiropractic Care, Acupuncturist and TCM on Danforth Ave in between Coxwell and Woodbine.

Medical Massage Boutique Advance Massage Therapy Techniques

Medical Massage Boutique- Massage in Toronto, on Danforth Avenue, an award Winning Clinic offers a personalized one on one Advance Medical Massage Treatments, boutique style setting in the heart of Danforth Ave. between Woodbine and Coxwell.

" Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" by World Health Organization, 1948.

Leg muscles are some of the most used muscles in the human body. They carry our body weight day in and day out while keeping us moving from place to place. Medical Massage Boutique on the Danforth has a Sports Massage Program, Fascial Therapy Techniques, Neuromuscular Therapy, Prenatal Massage and Swedish Massage.

The goal of any Therapist's fascial work is to reduce the restrictions, " Once they do the tissues and joints able to move better and there are fewer structural dysfunctions and imbalances.

How it Works?

The goal of Medical Massage Boutique's RMT's is to reduce tissue restrictions so that the structures are able to move better, resulting in fewer structural dysfunctions and imbalances.

In simple terms Fascial Therapy stretches the fascia and can be used anywhere there are fascial restrictions.

A great analogy is to ask the client if they have ever put on a T-shirt fresh out of the dryer. The T-shirt is sually a bit tight from the cleaning process, so it feels a bit uncomfortable. Fascia is like the tight shirt and the techniques are designed to stretch it out and allow them to feel better.

Understanding the difference:

Part of Medical Massage Boutique educating clients and potential clients about Fascial Therapy is going to involve helping clients understand how this modality is different from what you might think as a traditional massage.

The experience doesnt have to be uncomfortable though athletes or clients looking to recover quickly some discomfort maybe involved. So far a client is okay with a slower pace, more sessions might be needed to deal with the tissue.

Who's the Demographic?

Postural Inefficiences- neck, shoulders, hand, wrist, upper and lower back, hip, pelvis. knee, leg, anklee joint and toes.

Bio-mechanical dysfunction- imbalance of the musculoskeletal system resulting in faulty movement patterns ( i.e faulty lifting habits, bad mechanics in golf swing, tennis stroke or computer keyboarding.

Movement Dysfunction

Scar Tissue

Hip/Leg/Foot Imbalances

Neuromuscular Therapy-Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a form of soft tissue manual therapy. It is distinguished from other types of massage in that a quasi-static pressure is applied to the skin with the aim of stimulating sprcific areas of skeletal muscle. Often these areas of muscle are myofascial trigger points. NMT-is a very specialized form of manual therapy.

Swedish Massage: Study Examines the Effects of Swedish Massage Therapy on Hormones and Immune Function.

Massage is used for many health purposes, but little is known about how it works on a biological level. A recent study published in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine examined the effects of one session of Swedish Massage Therapy a form of massage using long strokes, kneading, deep circular movements, vibration, and tapping on the body's hormonal response and immune function.

Funded in part by NCCAM, researchers from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, randomly assigned 53 healthy adults to recieved one session of either Swedish Massage or Light Touch ( in which the Therapist used only a light touch with the back of the hand). Both interventions lasted only 45 minutes and were performed by licensed massage therapist. Blood samples taken before and after the sessions were used to determine blood levels of certain hormones and circulating lymphocytes( white blood cells). The researchers found that participants who recieved Swedish Massage had significant decrease in hormone arginine-vasopressin( which plays a role in regulating blood pressure and water retention) compared with those who were treated with light touch. No significant differences between the two groups for the stress hormone cortisol or circulating lymphocytes. Significant decreases in proteins called cytokines(interleukin 4 and interleukin 10), but not others(interleukin 1 beta, interleukin 2, interleukin 5 and tumor necrosis factor alpha), where found for the massage group compared with the light touch group. These preliminary data led the researchers to conclude that a single session of Swedish massage produces measurable biological effects and may have an effect on immune system. Howeever more research is needed to determine the specific mechanisms and pathways behind these changes.

Rappaport MH, Schettler P. Bresee C. A preliminary study of the effects of a single session of Swedish massage on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and immune function in normal individuals. The Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine.

Massage on Danforth. "Massage and Pregnancy": Benefits of Prenatal Massage

 by: American Pregnancy Association

Studies indicate that Massage Therapy performed suring pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and  newborn health. Massage Therapy addresses different needs through varying techniques, one of which is called Swedish Massage.

Swedish Massage aims to relax muscle tension and improve lymphatic and blood circulation through mild pressure applied to the muscle groups of the body . Swedish Massage is the recommended massage method during pregnancy because it addresses many common discomforts associated with the skeletal circulatory changes brought on by hormones shifts.

Hormone Regulation

Studies done in the past 10 years have shown that hormone levels associated  with relaxation and stress  are significantly altered when massage therapy is introduced to women's prenatal care. This leads to mood  regulation and improved cardiovascular health. In women who recieved bi-weekly massages for only five weeks, hormones such as norepinephrine and cortisol ( hormone associated with stress) were reducecd, and dopamine and cortisol (  hormone associated with stress ) were reduced, and dopamine and  serotin levels were increased ( low levels of these hormones are associated with depression).

These changes in hormone levels also led to few er complications during birth and few er instances of new complications, such as low birth weight. The evidence strongly suggests there are maternal and newborn health benefits when therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care.
